I'll be honest — this one hurts.
The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers have been eliminated from the 2026 NHL playoffs.
The Florida Panthers, back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, have been officially eliminated from the 2026 NHL playoffs. A 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins sealed the deal, and for the first time since the 2018-19 season, Florida will be watching the postseason from home.
As a Panthers fan, I've been spoiled. Two championships. A Finals appearance the year before that. Three deep playoff runs in a row. That's an extraordinary stretch of hockey, and no amount of disappointment right now erases what this team accomplished.
But injuries piled up. The grind of three straight deep playoff runs took its toll. And eventually, even the best teams run out of gas. This year was that year for Florida.
Now the question becomes — what does a Panthers-less playoff field look like, and who steps up to fill the void?
Can Carolina Finally Get Over the Hump?
The Carolina Hurricanes have already clinched a playoff spot, and for years they've been one of the most consistent teams in the Eastern Conference. But Florida has been a wall they couldn't get past.
With the Panthers out, the path is clearer than it's been in years. Carolina has the depth, the goaltending, and the system to make a deep run. If there was ever a year for the Hurricanes to break through, this is it.
Will Tampa Bay Seize the Moment?
The Tampa Bay Lightning are also in, and nobody should sleep on them. Tampa knows how to win in the playoffs — they've done it before and their core still has plenty left. With Florida out of the picture, the entire Southeast corridor of the bracket opens up.
Expect the Lightning to be dangerous. They always are.
The Buffalo Sabres Are Back — Finally
This one deserves its own celebration. The Buffalo Sabres have clinched a playoff spot, ending one of the longest droughts in professional sports. Sabres fans have been waiting a long, long time for this moment, and they've earned the right to enjoy every second of it.
Buffalo is going to bring an electric atmosphere and a fanbase that's been starving for playoff hockey. Don't be surprised if that energy carries them further than anyone expects.
Edmonton's Window Is Wide Open
The Edmonton Oilers are sitting in first place in the Pacific Division and riding a five-game winning streak heading into the final stretch of the regular season. They've lost in the Stanley Cup Finals the last two years — once to Vegas, and once to Florida.
With the Panthers eliminated, the biggest obstacle standing between Edmonton and a championship is gone. McDavid and Draisaitl have been chasing this thing for years. This might finally be their year.
A New Stanley Cup Champion Is Coming
Here's the one guarantee out of all of this — the NHL will have a brand new Stanley Cup champion in 2026. Florida can't repeat. The door is open.
Carolina, Tampa, Edmonton, Colorado — whoever lifts the Cup this year does it without having to go through the back-to-back champs. That changes everything.
