The road to the Stanley Cup begins April 18. Here are my picks.
The puck drops on the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs tomorrow, and we've got a field of 16 teams with a handful of legitimate Cup contenders, a few dangerous underdogs, and at least one first-time playoff team ready to make some noise.
Let's get into it — all 8 first round matchups, my picks, and the team I'm betting on to hoist the Cup.
Eastern Conference First Round
(M1) Carolina Hurricanes vs. (WC2) Ottawa Senators
Carolina earned the top seed in the Metropolitan Division for a reason — they've been one of the most consistently excellent teams in the Eastern Conference all season. The Hurricanes play suffocating defensive hockey, they've got depth throughout the lineup, and Rod Brind'Amour has them playing their best when it matters most.
Ottawa had a genuinely impressive regular season to earn a Wild Card spot, but the jump from Wild Card contender to first round winner against a team like Carolina is a massive ask.
Pick: Carolina in 5
(M2) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (M3) Philadelphia Flyers
The Battle of Pennsylvania is back, and don't sleep on these Penguins. Pittsburgh has been flying under the radar all season — the kind of team that doesn't get enough credit until they've already beaten you. They've got experience, they've got structure, and they match up well against a Flyers team that can get physical but isn't built to go deep in a series.
Philly will make this physical and give the Penguins a battle, but Pittsburgh has too much playoff experience and too much skill up front.
Pick: Pittsburgh in 6
(A1) Buffalo Sabres vs. (WC1) Boston Bruins
This is the series I'm most intrigued by. Buffalo finishing as the Atlantic Division's top seed isn't an accident — the Sabres have been building toward this and they've arrived. The Bruins are Boston, they know how to win in the playoffs, and you never fully count them out.
But I'm going with the Sabres here. They earned that top seed, they've got youth and energy on their side, and playing meaningful hockey all season long has prepared them for this moment. Call it a mild upset if you want — I just think this is Buffalo's time.
Pick: Buffalo in 7 ⚡ Upset alert
(A2) Tampa Bay Lightning vs. (A3) Montreal Canadiens
A rematch of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, and just like back then, I don't see this going Montreal's way. Nikita Kucherov is playing at a different level right now — the kind of level where he can take over a series by himself. Tampa has the experience, the structure, and the firepower to advance comfortably.
Montreal earned their spot and their fans will enjoy the playoff atmosphere, but the Lightning are built for this.
Pick: Tampa Bay in 5
Western Conference First Round
(C1) Colorado Avalanche vs. (WC2) Los Angeles Kings
Nathan MacKinnon. Cale Makar. Colorado is the Stanley Cup favorite for a reason and this first round matchup shouldn't change that. The Kings are a tough, defensive team that won't roll over, but the Avalanche have too much firepower and too many weapons at every position.
This is Colorado's bracket to win.
Pick: Colorado in 5
(C2) Dallas Stars vs. (C3) Minnesota Wild
Two Central Division teams that know each other well. Dallas has been here before — the Stars have the playoff experience and the defensive structure to grind out a series. Minnesota will push them, but the Stars' big game experience gives them the edge when things get tight in the third period.
Pick: Dallas in 6
(P1) Vegas Golden Knights vs. (WC1) Utah Mammoth
Utah's Mammoth are making their first ever playoff appearance and the hockey world is genuinely excited about it. That's a real story and a real accomplishment for a franchise still finding its footing. But Vegas is a machine — they've been in this situation before and they know exactly how to handle first-time playoff teams.
Give Utah credit for being here. Then give Vegas credit for sending them home early.
Pick: Vegas in 4
(P2) Edmonton Oilers vs. (P3) Anaheim Ducks
Connor McDavid. Leon Draisaitl. That's really all you need to know about this series. Anaheim is going to compete and their goaltending could give Edmonton some scares, but the Oilers have two of the best players on the planet and that matters in a seven-game series.
Pick: Edmonton in 5
Conference Finals Predictions
Eastern Conference: Carolina vs. Tampa Bay
Carolina gets past Ottawa comfortably, Tampa Bay handles Montreal, and we get the Eastern Conference Final matchup the hockey world was hoping for. This is the series I'm most excited about. Two elite defensive systems, two coaches who know how to adjust, Kucherov vs. an entire Hurricanes roster.
I'm taking the Lightning. Kucherov at this level is simply too dangerous, and Tampa has the playoff pedigree to close it out when they need to.
East Final: Tampa Bay
Western Conference: Colorado vs. Dallas
Colorado rolls through their side of the bracket, Dallas grinds past Minnesota and Vegas, and the Avalanche get a real test in the Western Conference Final. The Stars won't make it easy — Dallas knows how to play tight, defensive hockey and they'll slow Colorado down.
But MacKinnon and Makar are too good. Colorado finds a way.
West Final: Colorado
Stanley Cup Prediction: Colorado Avalanche 🏒
Colorado over Tampa Bay in 6.
This is the matchup I've been circling since the bracket was set. MacKinnon vs. Kucherov for the Cup — two of the best players in the world on the biggest stage.
Tampa Bay will make this a series. They'll win a couple of games on Kucherov brilliance alone and remind everyone why they're perennial contenders. But Colorado's depth is just too much. Makar controls the blue line, MacKinnon controls the game, and the Avalanche have enough pieces around them to win the series even when the Lightning are at their best.
Colorado hoists the Cup. MacKinnon finally gets the Conn Smythe moment his career deserves.
