Rod Brind'Amour goes back to face the team that dealt him away. Philly's Cinderella run hits its toughest test.
The Carolina Hurricanes are the class of the Eastern Conference. The Philadelphia Flyers are the best story in the playoffs. One of those things matters more than the other when the puck drops in Raleigh.
Here is the full series breakdown.
The Matchup
Carolina swept Ottawa in Round 1 and have had six days to rest, recover, and prepare. Philadelphia knocked out Pittsburgh in six games — a genuinely impressive result for a team that was sitting at 3.8% playoff odds after the Olympic break before going 18-8 down the stretch just to get in.
The Hurricanes are -330 favorites. The betting market has them winning this series roughly 77% of the time. That number is not wrong.
Why Carolina Wins This Series
Frederik Andersen was one of the best goalies in the entire first round. A .955 save percentage and a 1.10 GAA against Ottawa — and he was doing it against a team that had real offensive weapons. Against Philadelphia's offense, which ranked below Carolina's in nearly every meaningful category, that number is not going to get worse.
Carolina's penalty kill was historically good in Round 1 — 20-for-21, a 95.2% rate. That is not a sustainable number, but it tells you everything about the system Rod Brind'Amour runs.
And the Flyers' power play went 2-for-17 (11.8%) against Pittsburgh. Eleven-point-eight percent against the best penalty kill in the playoffs is a serious problem with no easy fix.
The depth is also real. Taylor Hall had 7 points in Round 1. Logan Stankoven scored in every game. Andrei Svechnikov generated 18 shots and did not score — which means he is either about to get going or Carolina wins this without him needing to.
The Flyers' Angle — and Why It Could Get Interesting
Philadelphia is not here by accident. They outplayed Pittsburgh when it mattered most, and coach Rick Tocchet has them playing disciplined, low-event hockey that has given higher-seeded teams problems before.
Dan Vladar held his own against a tough Penguins offense — .937 SV%, two shutouts, including a series-clinching 1-0 overtime win. He has earned his shot at a bigger stage.
The wildcard is Matvei Michkov. The 2023 first-overall pick was benched in Game 5 against Pittsburgh, came back in Game 6, and delivered a key primary assist on the series winner. His ceiling is enormous. His consistency has been the question all season. If he finds his game against Carolina, the Flyers have a genuine offensive threat. If he disappears again, they do not have enough.
The Storyline Nobody Is Ignoring
Rod Brind'Amour was traded away by Philadelphia as a player. He has built one of the best coaching careers of his era in Carolina. Now he goes back and faces the franchise that dealt him.
It is not the kind of thing that changes the outcome of a playoff series. But it is the kind of thing that adds real edge to every game.
The Pick
Carolina in 6.
The Flyers will compete. They will win games. Vladar will make big saves, Michkov will have moments, and Tocchet will have his team ready. But Carolina's structure, goaltending, and depth are a tier above what Philadelphia can match for a full seven games.
The Hurricanes are going to the third round. This is about how hard Philly makes them work to get there.
